Vomiting While Driving: What NOT To Do

  1. Do not try to throw up out the window while your vehicle is moving. This is incredibly dangerous and will most likely result in you swerving.
  2. Do not stop your vehicle suddenly or try to pull over when you are travelling at high speed. You may cause an accident.
  3. Do not forget to put your flashers on when you pull over on the side of the road. It’s important to make sure other vehicles can see you.

  • Mild flavored chewing gum (ginger is said to be helpful for preventing/helping nausea)

Vomiting While Driving: What To Do If You Can’t Pull Over

So you’re sick and you are in a position where you can’t safely pull over. There are a few options to choose from, depending on your level of preparation.

  • If you have a sick bag, you may choose to use that. It’s best if you have another passenger who can grab the wheel for you.
  • Another option, when you do not have a passenger to help you out, is to hold your shirt open and allow yourself to get sick on your chest. This makes it easier to keep your eyes on the road and is an easier clean up.
  • The final and messiest option is to simply allow yourself to get sick towards your steering wheel and dashboard. This allows you to continue to look at the road. It’s better to have to clean your vehicle than it is to risk your life attempting to save your upholstery.
