Three Easy Steps to Changing a Tire

Step 1: Stop and Get Your Tools

Whether you are a pro when it comes to cars, or you know very little about them, your first step is going to be stopping your car and putting it in park. Any rolling around when you are changing the tire is very dangerous. The tools you need are a spare tire, a car jack, and a tire iron or wrench that you can use to loosen the bolts. If you have all these things ready to do, it’s time to change a tire!

Step 2: Prepare to Jack Your Car

Place your car jack underneath your car. There should be a designated safe spot for you to place the jack and raise your car. If you are unsure of where to place the jack, take a look inside your owners’ manual. You don’t want to damage the suspension on your vehicle by placing the jack in the wrong place. Raise the jack until it is supporting the weight of your vehicle, but not lifting the wheel off the ground.
Then, use your tire iron to loosen the bolts holding your wheel to the car. These are more than likely going to be challenging to loosen, so don’t be afraid to use your body weight.

Step 3: Take off the Wheel and Replace It

Once you have the bolts loose, raise the jack until your wheel is just off the ground. Take off the bolts and slide the wheel off and put it aside. Take your spare tire and put it onto the hub. Use the same bolts and secure the new tire to your car. You want to make sure that these bolts are very tight, so put some real effort into that.
Once you are confident in the bolts, you should be set to go! You officially changed your tire! Put your tools away and make sure to drive carefully on your way home. Listen for any strange sounds coming from the new tire, as you may not have tightened the bolts enough and the tire may not be secure.
