Our tips for Driving in the Winter Weather

Driving Safely in Winter Weather

Driving any car, and especially the smaller, lighter cars being produced today, in the winter can be a real struggle for many people. Getting traction when the road is slick with ice, or coming to a stop when packed snow is covering the street can make driving an absolute nightmare. Read here to learn a few ways you can give yourself a better chance at driving safely in winter weather.

#1: Think Ahead

Before even starting your car, you should make sure that all the important parts (the battery, heating system, tires, and windshield wipers) are working well. A car that drives the way it is supposed to will save you money as it is much cheaper to get things checked or fixed, than it is to tow and fix it after get into an accident!

Thinking about snow tires for your Fiat? Read about those here.

#2: Look Ahead

Take the normal distance you keep from vehicles and double it. This will prevent you from sliding into the car in front of you because you will be able to stop with distance to spare. Driving too close means less time to react and often results in slamming on the breaks.

If you are not comfortable driving in snowy weather, try giving yourself a chance to practice. A large empty parking lot after a snowstorm might be the best place to see what happens when you slam on the breaks!

#3: Don’t Try to Get Ahead

The most important thing to remember when driving in the winter is to have patience! Trying to rush through a blizzard by accelerating too quickly will most likely get you in trouble. Hydroplaning, sliding, and skidding are all incredibly dangerous if you’ve got a lead foot. Remember to be calm and realize that we are all trying to get through the day without an accident too!
