However, with the mind having a special way of organizing itself, we tend to “go away” for a second every now and then. Our minds begin to wander and we start to think of that one special day at the beach back in the day… and when we least expect it, we get distracted and daydreaming starts to happen. Daydreaming can become a real danger if it happens while behind the wheel. Here at Palmen Fiat, we want to make sure that you know how to stay safe on the road at all times.
The tricky thing about daydreaming is that while you might feel in contact with the environment around you, in reality you are completely separated from your surroundings. It can happen while you are driving home after a long day at the office, back from the gym, or getting back into town with your family after a weekend away.
Now, in order to decrease the times when your mind goes wandering off, there are a few steps you can easily take. For example, always keep your eyes moving! Change gaze every 2 seconds; The longer you tend to stare into the horizon, the faster it induces a wandering mind and a narrowing of peripheral vision.
Here’s another idea: If you don’t want your mind to wander, chew on something! Gum and crunchy foods will keep you alert. Also, try different routes when possible!
