Buying an Rental Car

Is it Smart to Buy a Former Rental Car?

When you’re looking to buy an affordable car there are lots of different options. You could buy a used car, a demo car, or a car that was previously a rental. Buying a former rental car can be a great way to save money, but there are a few red flags to check for. What makes a good formal rental car? We’ll give you some tips!

What’s the Difference Between Used and Former Rental?

Both cars were driven by someone else, right? Neither car is brand new. Both cars have some miles on them. It sounds basically the same, but you might want to consider the type of driver who had the car before you. Affordable, But Might be Worn

The thing about rental cars is that they have been driven by different people frequently throughout their life. One guy might have been a real lead foot, where the next driver was a frequent braker. Either way, the car was stuck adjusting to multiple drive styles and might have wear and tear in multiple places.

Potential Bumps and Scrapes

We are really careful with our own cars, but when people drive a rental they are often less careful. This can mean that there are a few more dings and scratches than you’d like to see. Keep an eye out for any that go through the paint, as rust can develop very quickly!

Often Well-Maintained

While the renters themselves might not take the best care of the car, the rental agencies are often very careful with the vehicles and might maintain them even more than the average private owner! It’s in the best interests for the agency that the cars last longer, so they try to make sure that happens. They also usually have detailed records of maintenance and repairs done on the vehicle that you can look at through Carfax.
