What to Do When Your Car Overheats?

6 Steps to Take When You Have an Engine Overheating

Overheating is a common problem that can happen to any car, especially in warmer climates. It’s important to know the signs of an overheating engine and what steps to take if it happens. In this blog by Palmen Fiat in Kenosha, WI, we’ll discuss how to spot the signs of an overheating car and what to do when your car overheats.

Step 1: Pull Over Safely

The first thing you should do when your car overheats is to pull over safely. If you are driving on the highway, try to get to an exit as soon as possible. If you are driving in the city, look for a safe place to pull over. Once you have found a safe location, turn off your engine and engage the emergency brake.

Step 2: Open the Hood

After you have safely pulled over, open the hood of your car to allow the heat to dissipate. This will help to cool down the engine and prevent further overheating.

Step 3: Check the Coolant Level

One of the most common causes of car overheating is a low coolant level. Check the coolant level in your car and see if it is low. If it is, you can try adding more coolant to the system. Be sure to use the correct type of coolant for your vehicle, as using the wrong type can cause damage to your engine.

Step 4: Inspect the Radiator and Hoses

Another common cause of car overheating is a blocked radiator or leaky hoses. Inspect the radiator and hoses for any signs of damage or blockages. If you notice any leaks or damage, you should have your car towed to a mechanic for repairs.

Step 5: Wait for the Engine to Cool Down

After taking the above steps, it is important to wait for the engine to cool down before attempting to start it again. You should wait at least 30 minutes before starting the engine again.
