Oh man, Wrong Side of the Gas Pump!

which side of the car has the gas tank?

Have you ever driven in someone’s car and had to fill up the fuel tank only to realize that you don’t know which side to put next to the pump? Rather than craning your neck to look around and see where the little door is, look at your dashboard. So, which side of the car has the gas tank? We’ll tell you how to know for sure.

If you’ve ever studied a car’s dashboard you know that there is a lot of valuable information there. For example, you can see how fast you are going, how warm your engine is, and how much fuel you have left. The interesting thing that most people don’t know is that most cars actually tell you right on the dashboard which side the gas tank is on.

So where is it? If you look really closely at the fuel tank gauge, you will see the two ends of the spectrum, full and empty. You will also see the dial that moves along the spectrum to tell you how much gas is in there. Finally, you will see the little gas station icon. While it looks like a regular gas pump, there is often a little arrow next to it that points to the left or the right.

The direction the arrow is pointing is the side of the car that has the gas tank. It’s that simple! So, the next time you are driving a new or unfamiliar car and didn’t think to check which side had the filling spot before you go into the car (which can be a real bummer if you live where it gets extremely cold in the winter), you don’t have to spend the extra time peeking your head out to check. What you are looking for is right in front of you!
