Warmer Weather Means More Potholes

There are benefits and downfalls to a warmer winter, but we sure do appreciate the lack of icy roads and freezing fingers on the daily trek to work! Does a warmer winter mean we’ll have more or fewer potholes in Wisconsin? There are those that thing warmer weather means more potholes, while others argue that the milder temperatures keep the roads under control. Regardless of which side you are on, read more to find out the truth about potholes and our warm winter temperatures.

How Do Potholes Happen?

We all know that potholes pop up in the spring time as the roads shift due to changing temperatures. As the asphalt and pavement expands in the warmer air, pieces of the road fall out or disappear, leaving big holes that can do damage to your vehicle!

Wisconsin has had a particularly mild winter, and until almost January didn’t see a snowflake! While this gave the state some time to prepare for and repair existing potholes, and saved tons of money on snow removal efforts, the wintery weather is sure to still leave a few places open and ready to ruin your tires.

Potholes and a Warmer Winter

While warmer weather does keep the roads from shifting as much, and may result in fewer potholes overall, the warmer daytime temperatures and freezing nighttime temperatures can actually increase the number of potholes. With the constant shifts between melting and freezing, the streets you drive on may experience more stress and changes in temperature, thus resulting in more constant shifting. Does this mean that Wisconsin is in for an even more pothole-filled spring? We can’t say for sure, but we can hope that time before the freezing weather arrived was used to fill last year’s potholes in better preparation for this year!
