Why is premium gasoline more expensive?

Premium gasoline is definitely more expensive. Anyone can see that as the total adds up with each gallon. Only a few vehicles require premium gasoline, while many suggest it. What’s the big deal?

Well, first off, a vehicle engine might have a higher compression ratio. This means that, in simple terms, the engine runs smoothly with premium gasoline. The higher octane level keeps the engine from knocking. A high compression ratio mixed with cheaper fuel means a knocking engine, and that is one sound you do not want to hear.

However, a lower compression ratio engine with higher octane fuel will not make a noticeable difference. Lower and higher octane fuel work equally well with a lower compression ratio, despite the price difference. A myth that higher octane fuel offers better performance has been shown to be basically false, as the increased performance is almost unnoticeable.

Another false myth is that higher octane fuel (premium) keeps your engine cleaner. While certain fuel companies may put more cleaning solution in their gasoline, all fuel is required to contain detergent that works to keep you from experiencing engine buildup.

Vehicle owner’s manuals are the best place to find information about which level of fuel is needed for your car. Some vehicles require the premium fuel and those should not be ignored, but only suggestions for higher octane fuel can usually be taken as less than necessary.
